WHY TAKE MUET?

The MUET test becomes a necessity under the following circumstances:

  • If you have plans to pursue a university degree in local public universities, taking the MUET test is mandatory.
  • If you need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency to universities that recognize MUET.

How are the skills tested?

The test you’re referring to has the following structure:

  • The duration of the test is approximately 30 minutes.
  • It consists of 20 questions.
  • The test includes 5 texts with genres that span across lectures, briefings, interviews, announcements, and meetings.
  • Each recorded monologue or conversation will be played twice (it’s crucial to pay close attention!).
  • The questions may come in various forms, including information transfer, short-answer questions, or multiple-choice questions.

The test structure you’re referring to includes the following:

  • The test duration is set at 90 minutes.
  • It comprises 45 multiple-choice questions.
  • The test includes 6 texts that vary in length from 200 to 700 words. These texts could be articles sourced from journals, newspapers/magazines, or academic texts.

  • 90 minutes allocated
  • 2 questions which may come in the form of report, article, letter or essay formats
    • Question 1
      Summary writing with no less than 150 words. You will be asked to describe, summarise, explain, and interpret information, in your own words, based on information displayed in a graph, table, chart or diagram
    • Question 2
      Essay writing with no less than 350 words. You will be given a specific topic or issue which you will have to write about
Speaking

Speaking

  • Approximately 30 minutes allocated
  • 2 tasks involved which are based on contemporary issues
    • Task 1
      Individual presentation. You will be asked to speak and elaborate more on a certain point about a specific topic. You will be given two minutes to prepare and another two minutes to speak
    • Task 2

      Group interaction. In most cases, groups will consist of four candidates. Again, a group will be given two minutes to prepare

      Each individual candidate will be given a key point about a certain topic to further support or oppose during the group interaction. Each group will be given 10 minutes to discuss a particular given issue

HOW WILL YOU BE EVALUATED?

MUET evaluation

Your total score across the 4 components will determine your MUET Band, which is from Band 1 (lowest proficiency) to Band 6 (highest proficiency). The maximum score you can get is a MUET Band 6.
